What is Batik ?

But first, here is a brief introduction to the world of batik:

You do not use pen and paper for batik. Instead, you use cloth instead of paper, and wax instead of ink. When beginning a piece of batik work, you would draw a sketch using pencils of the design desired. Then, you would use a wax funnel – a tjanting, filled with hot melted wax, to trace over the patterns on the cloth. This type of batik art is known as batik tulis – which means writing, completely using wax by hand with the tjanting tool. From this method, you can see the changes in the variation in size and shapes of the wax flowing.

Our batik instructors will explain the history of batik in a more in depth manner during the batik workshop.

Originated from Java, Indonesia, Batik is a traditional art formed by a unique wax-resist dyeing technique.

Batik has become a means of artistic expression for many people in Asia and has become deeply entrenched in the Asian culture. Batik is done when hot wax beads or blocks are melted over fire. The hot wax is then scooped up with the canting and used to draw on the fabric. Fabric dyes is then painted on the fabric, with the applied wax resisting the dyes. When the colouring is completed, remove the applied wax by submerging the cloth in boiling water, hairdryer or using an iron to melt the wax.
